Of-Love Raen

Of-Love Raen stood behind his Created as she sat at her desk, furiously typing her email answer to the impolite tirade sent by the thoroughly unprofessional professor of Organizational Behaviour. Raen could sense that another Guardian, probably an Of-Pride or possibly an Of-Anger had just been working on her and that she was reacting to the other’s influence.

Raen was loyal to his job and his Source Of-Love, but over the course of this Guardianship, he had grown to have a deeper understanding of his Created’s struggle with doing what was right and doing what was going to get her what she wanted. She was not an unreasonable person; in fact, Raen had not had to Radiate quite as much with this Created as he had to with her grand-uncle. This Created, Samantha Chang, was generally a happy person with good intentions. She did not know her grand-uncle, obviously, because that was the only way Guardianship worked. Being Sam’s primary Guardian, Raen could only apply to a new job when his original Created passed on. He was thoroughly exhausted after his stint with Chang Wei-Cheng. Chang was a very traditional, conservative Chinese man – stubborn and chauvinistic, though, back in those days, it was the norm and nothing to fret over. When Chang’s brother’s family escaped from China with the KMT government to Taiwan, he had decided not to go. He was hoping that the Communist government would be better than going to an unknown and uninhabited island 20,000 kilometers away. He ended up dying a lonely man, alone and lonely.

Thinking back to Sam’s conception, Raen remembered thinking that Sam had lovely parents. He was keen for this job because he had worked with Of-Love Skeye, Sam’s mother’s Guardian, before. Mr. Chang’s Primary Guardian was from another Source, but seemed like a decent enough sort, though Raen could sense that there were a number of other Guardians surrounding Mr. Chang that were not as benign as Of-Responsibility Noww.

Sam cursed under her breath as she carefully read over the message she was crafting. With her left baby finger, she pressed the shift-key and then hit the up-arrow with her right index finger a number of times. Then, the same right index-finger hovered over the Delete-button. She hesitated, took a deep breath, rolled her chair back two feet and stood up. Raen had not moved, so his Frame was now overlapping with her body and, as a result, she very quickly felt relaxed. She thought to herself, “In the scheme of things, I know I didn’t do anything wrong, so I’m not going to lose sleep over this. In any case, he’s going to look like the idiot if he takes it up to the next level. Professors!” She rolled her eyes and laughed, “Thank goodness I’m never going to be an academic – what a bunch of whining babies!” Sam giggled, “In fact, between the always complaining MBA students and the forever irritated faculty, I totally feel like a baby sitter! Oh well, lucky for me, I love working here and 95% of the students are fabulous to work with.”

Raen stepped back.

Sam sat down, pulled up her chair and hit the Delete-button. She started typing again, this time humming to the Eminem song playing on the Internet radio.
